Wollongong City Council Foreshore Litter Picking

CLIENT: Wollongong City Council

LOCATION: Wollongong, NSW

Challenge

Wollongong City Council required additional labour support to help maintain clean foreshore areas during the busy summer period. With increased visitor numbers across beaches and coastal parks over Christmas and New Year, reliable and flexible staffing was needed to keep popular public spaces litter-free.

Solution

Green Yakka provided a dedicated waste labour team to support foreshore clean-ups across 10 coastal locations, from Windang Beach in the south to Austinmer in the north. Over a three-week period during the peak holiday season, Green Yakka workers delivered consistent litter-picking services to help maintain clean and welcoming beachside environments for the community and visitors.

Outcome

  • Paid shift opportunities created for more than 20 casual workers experiencing barriers to employment, including former refugees
  • Clean, well-maintained foreshore areas during Wollongong’s busiest tourism period
  • Litter removed from beaches and public spaces, helping protect local waterways and coastal ecosystems
  • Reliable waste labour support delivered across 10 beachside locations during peak summer demand
  • Welcoming, enjoyable public spaces maintained for residents and visitors over the holiday season
